Holy Texts?
I often wonder how holy or ancient texts have always carried within themselves silent patriarchy but ironically regarded as an epitome of morals and values for Humans.
Let us take for example the epic Ramayana. We see how Sita undergoes sati to prove her chastity. Though there may be several views to justify that but my foremost question is why? Why should a woman prove her chastity and for whom should she? But people often look over it.The major event of Ramayana if asked anyone, would be the great battle between Rama and Ravana or the archery skills of Rama or would revolve around Rama's so called kindness and loyalty. But what about Sita? We barely talk about her plight. We barely talk about the injustice that has happened to her. Or worse we justify it. Sita makes me wonder whether even a Goddess is not safe in this world made for men just because she is a woman?
Then comes Kannagi from Silapathigaram. People celebrate her for the love she has for Kovalan, her husband and for her chastity. But is he that of a good husband to deserve that? Didn't he abandon her and cheat on her? But people never look at it that way instead they talk about the injustice and false accusation that has happened to Kovalan and the unfair judgement of King Pandiyan. How does this make any sense? So does people somewhere expect their wives to still continue to support and cherish them even after getting cheated on? I am not here to say Kannagi is good or bad but why does the world doesn't talk enough about Kovalan's(man's) dishonesty as much as they glorify Kannagi for a good wife when he isn't a good husband?
The great text Mahabharata that's known for it's morals also presents the same idea. The whole plot revolves around a man's fragile ego that he believed was attacked by Draupadi. Thus he was this hunger and rage to destroy her by stealing her dignity. If Pandavas were that good and honest that they didn't stop him from harassing their wife just because they gave their words then where did that goodness go when they presented her to play a mere game. So did objectifying women exist centuries ago?We never talk about how Pandavas simply decided to share her among themselves as if she is some meal. Why?
All this makes me wonder did people just made these up in order to oppress women. Also am not hateful towards just any one religion or language these examples are just from what I have known, however we have many living examples of Sita ,Kannagi and Draupadi around us if only we listen to women.
